Helmets
Helmets
Helmets are one of the oldest forms of protective headgear. They were first used in 900BC by the
Assyrians and later they were used by ancient Greeks and Romans. The usage continued until the end
of 1600’s. Helmets were made from different materials. Early helmets were made of heavy leather,
later they were made from brass, bronze and finally from iron. After 950AD, helmets were made
entirely from forged steel. Helmets were an important part of personal armament as they offered
protection from swords, melee weapons and arrows. Helmet design differed between historical
periods and among various cultures.
