Spetum
Spetum
A spetum was a type of polearm that was used in medieval Europe during the 13th century. The spetum consisted of a wooden pole that was between 6-8 feet in length and which had a spearhead mounted on the top. The spearhead had two side blades at the base. The blades were single-edged and were used for slashing. The main blade at the center was about 12-14 inches in length and the side blades were about half of that length and protruded at sharp angles. The weapon was very effective as the main blade was long enough to pierce an opponent’s torso and damage organs. Also the side blades could be use to knock aside shields or even cut off limbs such as ankles or lower leg completely.
